Severe reaction from authorities over imported sample in Australia.

Seems to be heavily politicized given the time it took for them to react and the extent of their response months after they became aware.

Apparently he walked free after pleading guilty to a charge that should never have been brought. His defence team sucks.

Complete knee-jerk overreaction. Two things come to mind - Someone/some people messed up, got caught, so went like a bull in a china shop to blow it all out of proportions to cover their own ass/asses. The other, ABP wanted to make an example, and they used him. Nobody has been prosecuted with nuclear proliferation in ~80 years, AFAIK, so it was a great way for them to flex their muscles and show the world! And as usual, the mainstream media did a great job in scaring the public (as well as ABP et al) and teaching them how horrific and dangerous a tiny little source is. I have always said this: A radioactive source is as safe as the idiot holding it.

Thats pretty bad, I thought they whole case got thrown out of court.
It appears the whole case has been overly politicized given what we know.
My thorium mantles and camera lens is probably more radioactive than this.

I agree. I have some sources that are probably hotter than this. Plutonium itself is hardly harmful, unless ingested/inhaled. It's an alpha emitter so is easily blocked by a couple of layers of skin. The Demon Core (if you haven't heard the story, do read up on it) was a large mass of Plutonium (6.3kg - intended for the third atomic bomb) but as is primarily an Alpha emitter you could physically hold it in bare hands - caveat, not for log though due to decay chains. It was also warm/hot, as in temperature due to the decay. So this guy's little smoke detector.... Meh.... Hardly harmful at all if handled properly. I would suggest that Radium painted clock hands, or dials, are far more harmful gram for gram than Plutonium! My thorium mantles and camera lens is probably more radioactive than this.

I would hate to think how many of these russian smoke detectors would be needed to approach anything near the size of the demon core, it would be in the millions.

Agreed, those clock hands are more harmful, and some old anti static record cleaning brushes also contained polonium 210, that stuff is nasty!
